Our Story

Dan Harrison:

Growing up in Colorado I think I cut my teeth fly-fishing the rivers and streams of this great state. I formed a love of the outdoors and pursued a career in being there. I started falling timber in Northern CA. and worked for one of the largest sawmills in the U.S. I started my own timber company and I worked with private land owners managing their lands to maximize their profits. With sound environmental practices along with maximizing their recreational assets I began my career in the outdoors.

For the past 30 years I’ve worked with landowners manage with a sound conservation practices for endangered/threatened species in most of the western states. I have also been a Real Estate agent in the state of Montana specializing in land and ranch sales. I am an active Board member for the Mule Deer Foundation (http://muledeer.org) and I am also the hunting ambassador for the Congressional Sportsman’s Foundation (http://https://congressionalsportsmen.org/about/ambassador-program/dan-harrison).

In the late 90’s I took over management of a 50,000 deeded acre ranch in Colorado. With unlimited and untapped recreational opportunities I brought this ranch to one of the top 5 hunting destinations in the U.S. for western big game mule deer, elk and bear. During this time which I feel is my greatest achievement, we introduced well over 400 hundred young hunters and women to this great sport. In association with the ranch I also ran a wilderness outfitted hunt in the Eagles Nest wilderness area of CO. We offered horseback hunts for elk, mule deer and bear. During this time, I also started Colorado Mountain Adventures/Harrisons Hunting to the present time. . Harrison’s Hunting also operates in Eastern CO., Montana, and also California.

With over 30yrs of being in the outdoors and guiding for the past 20yrs has led me to being a guest host for nine seasons on The Best and Worst of Tred Barta. During the nine seasons this show ranked as one of the number one watched outdoor shows on the Neilson charts. This show has aired on Versus and now NBC Sports Outdoors. Beginning the fall of 2012 I will also Co-Host and be an elk expert on Elk Fever. This show has also been on top of the charts on Versus and NBC Sports Outdoors. In 2016 I accepted a position with Remington Arms hosting Remington Country TV. I have also made appearances on Cabelas Sportsman Quest, Nartual Gears Wildlife Quest, Rugers Hunting Adventures, the World of Beretta, Bennelli’s Outdoor Adventures, TNT Outdoor Explosion, Ford’s PBR Outdoors, Redfields Redzone and Fly Fishing the World. Currently we are in production on “Reloading Our Heritage”, this show is teamed with Rob Keck. We are trying to reload our heritage introducing non-hunters and inspiring new mentors into our outdoor lifestyle. This show is going to go live on Carbon TV starting the fall of 2021.

Betsy Harrison:

Betsy (Wandtke) Harrison was the former Director of Operations for “Weatherby Foundation International”.
Betsy’s passion for the outdoors and to get youth and women introduced to the wonders of nature and hunting/fishing brought her to collaborate with other like-minded friends and she partnered to form a nonprofit – “The Great American Mentors” matching outdoor mentors and youth on life-altering trips. Over the years, the nonprofit evolved to “Reloading our Heritage” complete with videos of kids experiencing many “firsts” in the field.
Betsy’s love to hunt/fish in the United States, brought her to travel all over the world in other hunting and fishing adventures. She has hunted many parts of Africa, Mozambique, Australia and New Zealand. She has also hunted and fished many areas of Manitoba for moose, wolves and the great whitetail bucks of central Manitoba.

Driven by a desire to share the transformative experience of responsible hunting, Betsy embarked on a mission to create a community that celebrates both the thrill of the chase and the conservation of our planet’s natural resources. What started as a personal passion soon evolved into Reloading Our Heritage and Harrison Hunting, a haven for hunters who value sustainability, ethics, and camaraderie.

Cool, crisp air. The crunchy feel of underbrush sparking each step. A perfectly mild sky with the ideal mix of clouds and sun. Complications dissolve and peaceful simplicity reigns. You are back to your roots.
Others travel alongside you, each clothed in muddy browns and mossy greens. Hunters all, proudly reliving an age-old tradition of common heritage.
Teamwork may not be essential for this particular hunt, but the company of your brothers-in-arms is always welcome. The camaraderie enhances the fresh air that invites you to venture outdoors and find serenity. Your group shares a special, almost sacred bond that must also have animated the hunting parties of olden times.

Nothing quite beats the satisfaction that is found in a successful hunt. You rejuvenate your soul, calm your mind, and exercise your body all while implementing teamwork and building friendships. The most rewarding part may just be the fulfillment you experience by providing for your family by bringing fresh meat to the table.

So many of our youth today are searching for purpose and meaning, looking for direction in pop culture and finding none. Somewhere, in the static of screen time and electronic chatter, they have lost a vital connection to the earth. We, as hunters, are in a unique position to model a way of life and of thinking that nourishes the soul. We can become mentors.

We can use the wilderness as a tool to instill our values in this country’s young people–lasting values that they will be able to use in later life. For many of us, the love of the outdoors and of our sport was kindled when someone took the time to invest in our lives. When someone took the time to take a kid hunting.

Hunting provides an unparalleled opportunity to teach a real-life skill with real rewards. A skill that carries constant challenge and opportunities for improvement. We can teach this generation that stewardship of our land comes in many forms–that responsible hunters are, in fact, some of today’s most dedicated environmentalists. It’s on our shoulders to educate our youth and arm them with the most powerful weapon in the world–the truth.

Think of all of the facets of our sport. The physical exhilaration of a long, hard hike while hauling equipment. The mental effort of tracking prey and determining how best to take it. The practice needed to attain the ability to use your weapon effectively. All these hard-won skills serve to give a sense of pride and accomplishment. Ours is not a sport in which everyone gets a participation trophy. Every hunting trip provides rewards, certainly, but the trophies are earned.

There is something to be said for having pride in your work, and a well-executed hunt is worthy of praise. Not only that, but it connects us to our heritage–a long-standing legacy that has been passed down from generation to generation since man and beast first walked the earth. This legacy is a treasure worth keeping, protecting, and continuing; hunting and fishing is not just our right, it’s our heritage.

Our Hunting Heritage Is In Your Hands

By: Dan Harrison
Dan Harrison is a veteran guide and outdoorsman, native Coloradan and long-time supporter and partner of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation. Harrison is also an expert tracker for trophy mule deer, elk and bear, having helped score numerous hunters into the record books over his 20+ year career. From horseback hunts, to five-star tent camps, to Boone and Crockett rankings,

There’s only one person who can ensure the future of hunting, fishing and celebrating the great outdoors. And that’s YOU, my friend.

Think back to your earliest outdoor memory. You were cold. It was dark. You were wearing someone else’s boots and a hand-me-down coat. You were somewhere you’d never been…in a place you’d always wondered about. And you were in the shadow of a mentor: a sibling, parent, uncle, neighbor who gave you that gift of discovery. Somebody showed you the way.

Now you need to return the favor to the next generation and the future of conservation. Not just because it’s a stand-up thing to do but because it’s our calling as outdoorsmen and women to pass on our passion for all things wild.

I call it “Reloading Our Heritage;” being pro-active mentors seeking out starry-eyed kids who are hungry for adventure along with fresh air, self-confidence, independence, physical fitness and personal development.

Why do I care so much about the next generation of sportsmen and women? Because they will carry on when we are gone. They are our sporting legacy. And they need us. Badly.

It seems like every kid I meet is starved for something real in their lives beyond their mind-numbing video games and not-so-smart smartphones. Ironically, technology could be one way to do get kids involved.

I recently got my hands on a Bushnell Trophy Cam HD, one of those wireless ones that send the pictures to your phone. Well, even though I coulda done it myself, I let a youngster show me how to get that thing working. And then she and I hiked out into the woods with lots of chatting and learning along the way. I showed her where I’d set it up and she showed me how to make it go.

Then I put her in charge of monitoring it and managing all the photos that come through. Now a wild new world is unfolding before her and neither one of us can wait to go set up another camera.

The premise of “Reloading Our Heritage” is that we absolutely HAVE to pass along our love and knowledge of the outdoors. Each one of us. Every chance we get. Or there won’t BE an outdoors. Period.

You can be a mentor, too. Look for your first little sidekick at church or through a local Boy Scout troop.  Get involved with Fathers in the Field or Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Then get those kids out of their comfort zones and into the REAL world. Once they get a taste of that freedom and adventure they’ll never lose their appetite for it. Just like you and me way back when.

One little outdoor act of kindness at a time, YOU can make all the difference in the world.
